About SGSI

Slovenian Genealogy Society International, Inc., founded in 1986 by Al Peterlin,  of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. The society was established to preserve and make available records documenting the lives of individuals with Slovenian ancestry. 

SGSI is a self-help community whose common goal is to help members make use of available information to perform their own genealogy research.

Slovenian Genealogy Society International, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and our offices are located at 6415 St. Clair Avenue Cleveland, OH 44103.

    A forum to help individuals discover, research, and exchange genealogy information specific to Slovenia
    • Our website provides members with thousands of online resources to build their Slovenian family tree.
    • Our SGSI Facebook Group provides a forum for members to post questions about genealogical research, share Slovenian cultural events and provides information on resources available.
    • SGSI organizes genealogical research trips to Slovenia. Ten-day trips include visits to archives and family visits in Slovenia.
    • Provides training and events to learn on how to research Slovenian roots.

    The SGSI Macek Research Center which preserves Slovenian genealogy records, publications, and oral histories

    • The SGSI Macek Research Center has thousands of Slovenian books and publications.
    • Our Graves Database (Michael Zakrajsek Graves Database) has 46,000 images of graves from Slovenia.
    • The SGSI collection of surnames indexes contains millions of historical references to Slovene surnames in books and publications.
    • Members and academic researchers with assistance in researching Slovenian genealogy.


    A Slovenian community where personal stories and experiences specific to the culture of Slovenia can be shared

    • SGSI publishes The Linden Tree four times a year. It contains articles on Slovenian genealogical research, culture, history, customs and members' travels to Slovenia.
    • SGSI awards the Frances Coberly Scholarship to study member the Slovene language at Cleveland State University.
    • SGSI assists members who are second-generation descendants of Slovene descendants in finding historical documents for applications for Slovene citizenship.
    • SGSI coordinates with genealogists in Slovenia and is the archives in Slovenia.
